OUTSTANDING ALEXANDRIA TEEN TO COMPETE FOR BOYS & GIRLS CLUBS OF AMERICA’S STATE YOUTH OF THE YEAR HONOR Alexandria, LA, March 3, 2010 – Kytara Davon Frazier is a true example of an extraordinary young woman. At age 18, she has just been selected to compete against other Boys & Girls Club members for the Louisiana Youth of the Year title on March 5, 2010, in Baton Rouge, LA, and a $1,000 scholarship from the Reader’s Digest Foundation. As the Youth of the Year for Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Louisiana, Inc., Frazier is among hundreds of local youth across the country recognized by Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) for her sound character, leadership skills and willingness to give back to the community.
Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. The title recognizes outstanding contributions to a member’s family, school, community and Boys & Girls Club, as well as personal challenges and obstacles overcome. This program was founded over 60 years ago through the generosity of Reader’s Digest.
Frazier is a senior at Peabody Magnet High School where she was a three-year letterman for the Lady Warhorses basketball team, and currently is a member of FBLA, Extreme Praise Ministries, and W. O. Hall Girl Scouts, She recently placed second runner-up in the Ebony Elite and Social Club and made her debut to society as a Debutante. Kytara has volunteered at the Manner House, Hope House, Friendship House, and various nursing homes.
As an AmeriCorps recruit, Frazier provides many volunteer hours to her local Club working with youth ages 6-9 and 10-12. At the end of her service commitment hours this month, she will be eligible for an educational award. "Frazier is such a giving person and all the youth at the Club love her dearly. She is such a positive role model and epitomizes a true leader" said Zina C. Paige, Chief Professional Officer, Boys & Girls Clubs of Central Louisiana, Inc., a member agency of United Way of Central Louisiana.
If Frazier wins at the state competition, she will compete for the title of Southeast Region Youth of the Year and an additional $10,000 scholarship. The five regional winners will advance to Washington, D.C., in September 2010 to compete for the title of BGCA’s National Youth of the Year. The National Youth of the Year receives an additional $15,000 college scholarship and is installed by the President in an Oval Office ceremony.
