This breadth of support helps ensure that the organization can withstand the ebbs and tides of funding streams, and provides a base for advocacy and volunteers. During this hands-on workshop each participant will develop a chart of potential stakeholders and target markets for membership, graph the benefit-exchange that each market provides and needs, and design a membership brochure, appeal letter, annual meeting and newsletter template. The institutions we have historically relied on to provide youth with adult support and guidance—families, schools and neighborhoods—have changed in ways that have dramatically reduced their capacity to deliver such support. Today, there is a scarcity of such support, especially among poor youth. Support and guidance are often provided through formal mentoring programs; however, many organizations struggle with recruiting mentors, especially mentors of color. This workshop will explore techniques to assist your organization in recruiting and retaining mentors regardless of race, ethnic background or gender.
